Older adults experience a number of major transitions, some leading to mental health issues.
Nonetheless, many older adults are capable of demonstrating resilience, wellness, and life
satisfaction in the face of major adversity. This session discusses the factors that influence
optimal aging, especially after widowhood and retirement, and integration of such factors into
treatment. Finally, Medicare advocacy is discussed as a means of expanding counseling services
in older adulthood.

This poster session is designed to assist counselors in gaining insight and understanding into the
challenges faced by veterans regarding career and college options. Attendees will learn about the
perceptions that veterans have regarding others and the adjustment issues they face. Additionally,
attendees will learn about ways to assist veterans to cope with the challenges they face and adjust
to civilian life in the workforce or in college.

The presenters, who are all women counselor educators, will share their perspectives on how to
succeed in the academic world through mentoring, collaborations, and leadership. A literate
review will be presented on developmental issues that women in academia present and identify
as impacting their ability to succeed in academia, which can be applicable to female clients who
juggle career, family, and relationships.
