GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

All manuscripts not meeting the specifications detailed below will be returned to the authors before review for publication.

•  All manuscripts must be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed., 2001).
•  Authors should reduce bias in language against persons on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic group, disability, or age by referring to the guidelines in the fifth edition of the APA publication manual. Avoid the use of the generic masculine pronoun and other sexist terminology.
•  According to ACA publication policy, the term subject should not be used when referring to a sample of research participants or to an individual participant. Usually a more specific term should be used (e.g., clients, students) or, if a more general term is desired, participants should be used.
•  Authors should not submit more than three tables or two figures with each manuscript. Refer to recent issues of the Adultspan Journal for table style. Double-space all tables. Each table should be on a separate page following the reference section of the article. Final placement of tables is at the discretion of the production editor.
•  Supply figures (graphs, illustrations, line drawings) as camera-ready. All lines and printing must be in proportion (e.g., no huge figures with small lettering), because figures are often reduced in size for publication. Complete lines must be used, no smudges may appear on the art, and no copies of original art may be used. Fonts should be sans serif and no smaller than 8 points. Figure captions may be attached to the art and will be set appropriately.
•  Lengthy quotations (generally 300–500 cumulative words or more from one source) require written permission from the copyright holder for reproduction. Adaptation of tables and figures also requires reproduction approval from the copyrighted source. It is the author’s responsibility to secure such permission and to pay any accompanying fees. A copy of the publisher’s written permission must be provided to the journal editor upon acceptance for publication.
•  References should follow APA style. Check all references for completeness, including year, volume number, and pages for journal citations.
•  Article title and headings should be as short as possible. On a separate page, place the title of the article, the names of the authors, their professional titles, their institutional or professional affiliations, and mailing addresses so that manuscripts may be reviewed anonymously.
•  Articles should include an abstract not to exceed 25–50 words.  The abstract should express the central idea of the article in nontechnical language. Do not use footnotes.
• E-mail intention of manuscript submission to the editor followed by an email with a word document (Microsoft 97-03) or rich text file of the completed manuscript to: rolandc@mail.montclair.edu. If you are unable to email an electronic file, send an original and three clear copies of all material, on nontranslucent 8 1/2 x 11" white bond (not onion skin or erasable bond), to Catherine B. Roland, Editor/ ADULTSPAN Journal/ Department Chair, Counseling and Educational Leadership/ Montclair State University/ 1 Normal Avenue/ University Hall 3161/ Montclair, NJ 07043. Do not send diskettes until requested to do so. If submitting via mail, notify editor by email prior to sending.  Email submission is preferred.
•  Double-space all material (including references), all lines of tables (including heads), and extensive quotes. Allow wide margins (at least 1 1/2" on all sides). Allow one extra space above and below subheads. Manuscripts should be typed in lines of 62 spaces and should be limited to 15–20 pages.
•  Never submit material that is under consideration by another publication.
•  Authors are expected to provide both a hard copy of their manuscript (final version only) and an electronic copy on a floppy diskette or via email. The disk format should be IBM compatible; All Microsoft Word files should be saved as Word 97-03 or as rich text file.  No other file formats will be accepted. Files must be submitted in Times Roman font in size 12. The author’s name and the hardware and software used should be clearly written on the diskette label or within the email, when called for after acceptance.
